Patriotism is very important to each of the members of the Harney Peak Chapter NSDAR as we have a number of retired veterans and spouses of retired veterans within our chapter. We openly look for opportunities that enable us to thank our veterans.

The Harney Peak Chapter NSDAR was a Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration partner for 2016-2018. Our chapter has honored South Dakota’s Vietnam War veterans at several events. The chapter has set up and maintains a Vietnam Veteran War Era display throughout the year at the 1881 Custer County Courthouse Museum. This display is right outside the military uniform display room, which is home to a Revolutionary War uniform donated to the museum by our Organizing Regent, Dorothy Ziolkowski.

We participate in Memorial and Veterans day events, volunteer at local VA hospitals, and participate in the yearly activities in partnership with the American Legion and VFW members in our communities. Some of these activities include serving lunch after the 4th of July parade, and placing flags on the graves of our fallen veterans. We also participated in wrapping gifts, and preparing them for mailing for the veterans residing in the State Veterans’ Home located in Hot Springs.

Additionally, members of our chapter make annual donations to Operation Black Hills Cabin, an organization located in Custer that provides a comfortable, peaceful and supportive respite to qualified, combat-injured veterans and their families, from the Iraq/Afghanistan operations; and to the Big Paws Canine Foundation, which trains companion dogs for disabled veterans.
